Case Study: Body of Lies

The thriller film, Body of Lies it was directed by Ridley Scott and released in 2008. It stars actors Leonardo DiCaprio and Russel Crowe.
The scene starts off black, with a quote "I and the public know, what all school children learn, those to whom evil is done, do evil in return." from W.H. Auden then it dips to "Manchester, England" written on-screen.

It then fades into the first scene of a foreign man speaking, this makes the audience feel like were not supposed to be here, and it's none of our business. Also the first scene starts to pan out showing us that no action is going to happen, and to prepare for the next scene.

On the second scene, it shows you around the foreign people's hide out, and just gives the audience a small idea of whats going on, and whats going to happen through-out the film. There is also some 'country like' music playing which gives the idea of being in an isolated place, but then it goes to the next scene of a police raid which is in the middle of Manchester and this gives you a different idea. There are then some fast camera changes showing the positions of all the police squad, this makes the audience think that they have caught the 'bad guys' because they are out numbered. The audience have no idea that the police are in the wrong location.

When the swat team are ready to raid in, the foreigners act like they have been suspected in the hideout, so you don't suspect the swat team being in the wrong place. When they pull the trigger to explode the building, the camera shots change rapidly, building up the suspense and keeping the audience interested. By the time of the end of the exploding scene, it ends which a long shot showing the entire area of the building blown up.

This is when the scene then ends, and it shows the name of the film "Body of Lies" in big broad writing with scenes moving within the text.

  1. Well done Lewis. Be consistent in describing the effect on the audience to do your ideas justice.
For example, "a foreign man speaking, this makes the audience feel like were not supposed to be here, and it's none of our business," is accurate, but explain fully how it is an English language film that uses another language to make the audience feel as if they are intruding or to give a sense of alienation towards understanding and culture - linking with the theme of the film.

A case study should also follow the plan outlined to ensure you meet all the criteria.
